What are some ways you use AI in your daily life as a construction professional?

I’m not a construction professional yet, but as a student there are a few ways I’ve heard about companies using AI. The most interesting example I’ve seen so far is AI powered drones to monitor site performance.

If you aren't a construction professional, how do you use AI at work? and do you think it could translate to be useful in construction?

I am not in construction, but I have used AI in project management to help me save time and be more efficient. For example, AI has helped me analyze complex and long documents quickly, write communications, put together project plans and schedules, and build artifacts that help with things like risk and resource management. All of these, in my opinion, could easily apply to construction project planning and management.

I think your essay was very good Clarie! You bring up interesting points about the 2 different camps of thought process (for and against AI).

I think there are some very applicable uses for AI - specifically to use to brainstorm a risk register for potential safety hazards. It will do the brainstorming work and create an extensive list. From there, the project lead can involve their team members to go through the different risks one by one and discuss the probability and mitigation plans to avoid.

This saves time from the team spending hours brainstorming when they could have a very reasonable starting point to begin their discussions.

I think the practical applications of AI is amazing and can save us many hours of work to focus on higher priority items.

I like the way you weigh the potential benefits and risks of using AI. Having a balanced approach like that helps strengthen your article. I thought the risks around trust and humans becoming unskilled resonate more than the environmental impact. I'm not saying environmental risks shouldn't be considered, but data trends over the past few decades are not as scary as many would have us believe, and the number of deaths impacted by environmental reasons have decreased 99% over the past 100 years. Overall, great balance and reasoning throughout your article! Nice work!

Do you think AI has a future in the construction industry?

I do think AI has a future in the construction industry. As a young person, I’ve seen the way that AI has changed a lot of aspects of my life, and I see it as only a matter of time before it spreads throughout the various industries.

What do you think?

Yes, AI has a significant future in construction. Its ability to enhance safety protocols, optimize workflows, and address labor shortages positions it as a transformative tool. However, the industry must proceed methodically, ensuring AI applications are both reliable and ethical. Over time, AI could integrate seamlessly into operations, just as other technological advancements have done in the past.

What are some things you would like to see solved in the industry? And likewise, how might AI begin to solve them?

Kind of similar to some of the points I went over in my essay, but I’ve been out there working in the skilled trades, and the labor shortage is getting scary. It’s getting hard to find people who are both skilled and reliable, and there are a lot of people who are in their late 50’s and 60’s who will be retiring soon. My dad – who owns a remodel business – always says that he loves the work side of things and wishes he didn’t have to be in the office all the time. I think AI has to potential to help small business owners get things off their plates so they can be more present in the field.

Let me know what you think!

Here are some challenges in the construction industry and potential AI-driven solutions:

  1. Workplace Safety: High incidence of injuries and fatalities. Solution: Advanced hazard detection systems using computer vision and real-time site monitoring could identify risks before incidents occur.

  2. Project Delays: Delays due to poor scheduling and unexpected disruptions. Solution: Predictive analytics to anticipate delays and reschedule dynamically, considering past project data and current site conditions.

  3. Cost Overruns: Rework and material waste significantly increase project costs. Solution: Digital twin technology and AI-powered simulations could improve planning accuracy and detect errors in design or execution early.

  4. Labor Shortages: Difficulty in finding skilled workers. Solution: Autonomous machinery and robots could handle repetitive tasks, freeing up skilled labor for complex work.

  5. Environmental Sustainability: Material waste. Solution: AI-driven material optimization tools could reduce waste by identifying the exact quantities needed for projects.
